La Porte des Indes is renowned for its Indian cuisine with a difference – specialties from the former French-Indian colonies as well as classic Indian cuisine and amazing fruit cocktails. This “Gateway to India” has been a London foodie’s favourite since opening in 1996, so I was delighted to be invited to sample the extensive menu.
From the outside, you wouldn’t guess that the interior includes a 40 foot waterfall, exotic plants and a Jungle Bar, housed in a former Edwardian ballroom with a spectacular ceiling. I discovered that it is a member of the Blue Elephant Group, also famed for their amazing decor. Our table overlooked the waterfall and it’s worth requesting a similar one if booking in advance, although the decoration throughout is spectacular. Set over two floors, there are four private dining rooms and also the Jungle Bar, which has an unusual tradition…of scattering peanut shells!
